BIOGRAPHICAL DATA
Sérgio Luís de Carvalho was born in Lisbon on July 2, 1959 and lives in Sintra.
He holds a degree in History from the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Lisbon (1981) and a Master's degree in Medieval History from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Nova University of Lisbon (1988).
He began his literary career in 1986 with the first titles of children's literature and history research. In 1989, his first novel ‘Anno Domini 1348´ won the Ferreira de Castro Literary Prize. In the following years, and until the present, several titles have been published successively in these three areas: novel, historical research and children's literature.
Some of his novels have been translated and published in France, Spain (in Galician and Castilian) and in Italy, having received very positive reviews in all these countries. His novel ‘Anno Domini 1348’ was, in fact, a finalist in France for two renowned literary awards: the Jean Monnet Literary Prize for European Literature (2004) and the Amphi Prize for European Literature (2005).
His book ‘History of Portugal told to children’ has been translated and published in the United States (Tagus Press), being the first History of Portugal for children translated into English.
He has short stories published in several collections and is also represented in several literary anthologies (Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Italy)
His novels fall mainly into the so-called historical novels, a genre in which he is considered, by specialized critics, as one of the most consistent and prestigious Portuguese authors.
