The Dance of the Fools

On April 19, 1506, in Lisbon, a man explained why a silver cross shined brightly. This simple fact triggered one of the biggest massacres in the History of Portugal. Devastated, Master Navarro leaves Lisbon with his daughters away from persecution.

On July 14, 1518, in Strasbourg, Mrs. Troffea began dancing wildly in the middle of the street, for no apparent reason. After a few days, there were more than four hundred people dancing, hallucinating... It was the beginning of one of the most bizarre epidemics in history.

What connection will there be between these two events, one so tragic, the other so mischievous?

"The novel, very cohesive in its parts (...) receives the mark of the author's usual style, here elevated, if not to a stylistic perfection, at least to a level of excellence"

Miguel Real, in Jornal de Letras, April 2023
